World Bee Day: A little buzz about our favourite tiny workers.

HAPPY WORLD BEE DAY

Today is World Bee Day.  A United nations celebration dedicated to the small but mighty creatures that quietly keep our world blooming, growing and quite frankly alive.  Here at Corner House Bees, it would feel rude not to join in the celebrations for our teeny favourite colleagues.

Bees are astonishingly hard working.  A single honey bee can visit hundreds of flowers in one day, but over her lifetime she will produce just one teaspoonful of honey. A teaspoon!  When you think about the effort involved, you realise just how important it is to get every last drop out of the jar.  Top tip – put a teaspoon in the jar (to avoid the jar cracking) pour almost boiling water into the jar to get out the last honey, pour into a mug, add lemon juice and you have a lovely refreshing (caffeine free) drink.

World Bee Day was created to remind us how important bees and other pollinators are to our environment and food supply.  Around one third of the food we eat depends on pollination.  So whether it’s apples, strawberries, coffee or almonds, we owe quite a lot to these fuzzy buzzy little workers.

At Corner House Bees, we see first hand just how remarkable bees are.  There is something endlessly calming about standing near a hive on a warm day, listening to the gentle hum of thousands of bees going about their daily routines.  They are organised, purposeful and surprisingly peaceful, although they do occasionally hold very strong opinions about the weather.

Our bees not only help pollinate the surrounding countryside, but they also provide the beautiful beeswax and honey that we use in our hand crafted soaps, lip balms and moisturisers.  Beeswax and honey are naturally nourishing, wonderfully protective of the skin and have been used for centuries in traditional skin care and medicines.

One of the very lovely things about being a Bee Keeper is that it encourages you to slow down, be calm and pay attention to your surroundings and the seasons.  The bees behaviour changes through the year.  Spring: a mad frenzy of activity and if you are not careful swarming.  Summer: peak production time and by Autumn the bees are preparing for winter and survival from the cold and damp.

World Bee Day also serves as a reminder that bees and other pollinators need our help.  Planting pollinator friendly flowers, avoiding harmful pesticides and perhaps allowing part of your garden to grow a little wild can make a real difference.  Plant some lavender or a bed or herbs and the bees will visit and be thankful.

So today we raise a metaphorical glass of mead or honey vodka (!) to the bees, those teeny tiny workers behind so much beauty, abundance and natural goodness.  From all of us at Corner House Bees, thank you for supporting small scale bee keeping, artisan skin care and the wonderful world of bees.

If you happen to see a bee happily drifting from flower to flower, take a moment to appreciate her (all the workers are girls!).  She is probably having a much busier day, and working far harder than many of us.
